Dear Mr. Xin,

So glad to read your article on World Journal today. Now days it's very hard to see such good writings, you really have the guts to tell the truth publicly.

Anyway, I like you writings much more than before. I am from Beijing, I don't minding you criticizing Commies as long as you have strong facts to support your point. Also, I do think you should take a trip to China and have a LONG-STAY.

By the way, how do I make a donation to your fund?

Best regards,

LW

Hi Bob,

Very glad to read your spirited comments in today's article.

"Despite its sufferings and short-comings, above all, China is a nation with very powerful people - people of high spirit, ambition and determination".

«H¥ý¥Í:

I have been reading your essays for sometime and, in general, I am in agreement with many of your views. However, I must take issue with your latest posting. Your statement "¯à§â13»õ¤H¥Áªº¨{¤l¶ñ¹¡´N¬O¹ï¤HÅvªº³Ì¤j°^Äm" seems to suggest that it is the PRC government's actions that help to sustain the livelihood of its citizens. I beg to differ, it is in fact the government's lack of intervention in the market place in the last ten years that has made it possible for the people to feed themselves (more or less)! Of course, we cannot ignore the fact that in many rural areas and even in some of the major metropolitan areas it is not easy to make a living! At the very least, one can only hope that the lessons of the "¤T¦~§xÃø®É´Á" will guide the party in the future.

And speaking of ¡u¤j¨aÃø«eªºÄµ°T¡v, I hope you have read two recent news reports on earthquake warnings and preparations in China prior to the May 12 quake. One is in the London Times (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/asia/china/article4039973.ece) and the other is in the International Herald Tribune Asia Pacific edition (http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/05/30/asia/quake.php). I know, we are not speaking of the same kind of warning and I do not have any affinity for that type of "propaganda" either. Nevertheless, it is one thing to empathize with the victims of the quake and another to call for the PRC government or the party to account for its misdeeds. A number of documents are currently available online that speak to the need for zoning, building codes and other preparatory measures in earthquake prone areas: http://www.seismo.ethz.ch/gshap/Gshap-97.html; and http://environment.newscientist.com/article/dn13885-accepted-level-of-earthquake-risk-in-china-too-high.html. A very insightful discussion on these issues can be found in http://www.rms.com/Publications/Bendimerad-13wcee.pdf. The author, Dr. Bendimerad puts it very clearly, "The increase in the cost and frequency of disasters is the direct result of human action. Disasters are not natural phenomena; disasters are directly correlated to development. Human development increases societal vulnerability to natural and man-made hazards. It impacts both the frequency and severity of disasters, increasing the susceptibility of population and impairing sustainable development." One can only hope that China will take these lessons learned to heart. As ¾¥¤l so eloquently noted:

        " ¸t ¤H ¥H ªv ¤Ñ ¤U ¬° ¨Æ ªÌ ¤] ¡A ¥² ª¾ ¶Ã ¤§ ©Ò ¦Û °_ ¡A ²j ¯àªv ¤§ ¡A ¤£ ª¾ ¶Ã ¤§ ©Ò ¦Û °_ ¡A «h ¤£ ¯à ªv ¡D"

Unfortunately, I d o not have your faith in the PRC. As far as I am concerned this is a case of "Vulpes pilum mutat, non mores!" (Suetonius)-- "A fox may change its skin but never its character"¡Xor as we say in Chinese "·s²~°s." This will most likely never happen, but I cannot help admire a great poet's sentiment: "¤ý®v¥_©w¤¤ì¤é¡A®a²½Îã§Ñ§i¤D¯Î¡C"

Your sincere reader:
